About Alby
I've always believed that the best stories find you when you least expect them — usually hiding under a leaf, or curled inside a particularly interesting creature.
For three decades I built a career helping families plan their futures — but all the while, I was scribbling poems on notepads and spinning tales for my two boys that were definitely more entertaining than they needed to be.
Inspired by the wild beauty of Tasmania, a lifelong love of rhyme, and a childhood spent with Dr Seuss, I write picture books that celebrate the small, overlooked wonders of the natural world.
I live on the edge of a great adventure — quite literally — and I believe every child deserves a story that makes them look twice at the world around them.
For the first time in his life,— from The Most Marvellous Beetle by Alby Greenwood
he had absolutely nothing left to say.
The Books
Picture books that ask children — and the grown-ups beside them — to pause, wonder, and look a little more closely at the extraordinary world hiding in plain sight.
A story about the beautiful, nerve-wracking adventure of making a new friend — and climbing not just rocks, but the walls we build around ourselves. A picture book about courage, connection, and the unexpected places where friendship begins.
Jimmy has just spotted something extraordinary on a bush in the school yard — a beetle so rare, most people will never see one in their lifetime. A joyful, funny picture book about the magic of noticing, and the magnificent moment the world finally catches up with you.
Alby's Shelves
Every author is shaped by the stories they loved first. These are the picture books that live on Alby's shelves, dog-eared and treasured — the ones that proved a few words and the right illustration can change how a child sees the world.
"A picture book is the first theatre a child ever sits in." — Mem Fox
From the Greenwood
Lantana's launch into the Australasian market — distributed by Simon & Schuster Australia — was covered by Books+Publishing, the leading voice of the Australian and New Zealand book industry. The Rock Face was highlighted as a key upcoming local title, described as "a story about the beautiful, nerve-wracking adventure of making a new friend, and climbing not just rocks, but the walls we build around ourselves."
Two Lantana titles — Freedom Braids (Oboh Moses) and The Playdate (Clara Dackenberg) — are shortlisted for the 2026 Carnegie Medal for Illustration, with the Winners' Ceremony on 23 June. A proud moment for the Lantana family.
Thrilled to announce that my debut picture book, The Rock Face, has been contracted with Lantana Publishing UK, with distribution in Australia and New Zealand by Simon & Schuster Australia. Publication is expected from Autumn 2027.
Following editorial critique and revision, The Most Marvellous Beetle is now actively on submission. It is a story that explores hyperfocusing — a common experience for kids with ADHD. Jimmy is obsessed with beetles. Completely, utterly, magnificently obsessed. It can be a lot for those around him — until the moment his singular passion changes everything.
Welcome to Alby's corner of the internet — a place for stories, creatures, and the kind of wonder that hides under leaves. More to come.
